Hello, my out of warranty friend. Did you know that the proper water fill level in the basin is essential for the pump to develop adequate water pressure? Yes, it is true. I would, therefore, recommend that you begin your pilgrimmage to the Mecca of appliance enlightement by allowing the dishwasher to complete its normal fill and then opening the door to check the water level. A normal fill should come up to the heating element. Less than this would indicate a fill valve that has become clogged with many grains of desert sand. A partially filled GE can shake the walls.

I have a GE Spacemaker (or spacesaver) dishwasher that recently turned on me after 11 years of valuable and loyal service. It has begun to protest by making a loud churning/humming/groaning noise during several of its cycles. This noise was quite loud. The sound emanates from the lower reaches of the machine. The engineer in me says "bearings" but this partially filled GE dishwasher comment opens my horizons. I will record its identity tonight when I can read its model number. Vintage is 1994.
