Electric Stove: Ge Profile; model: JS968SOF4SS (this is on stove label).
Problem: Instructions needed to replace cracked Maintop Glass.
Part Cost $488
When I called GE they told me to use model number JS968SFSS for ordering:
http://products.geappliances.com/ApplProducts/Dispatcher?CHANNEL=CH0004&REQUEST=SPECPAGE&SITEID=DER&SKU=JS968SFSS

I was given this stove by someone remodeling kitchen. I don't want to install stove or pay $488 for part until I know how to replace. I am handy but don't want to damage anything by winging it without instructions.
I noticed there are 5 screws under lip where controls are in front but there are also many along the sides. Some specific instructions would help.

Can anyone advise? Thanks for taking the time to read this.

Well, for the price of the maintop you can go buy a new plug in coil range.  Why do you want to fix this if you got it for free?

It's a $1600 stove so I figure $500 investment would be worth it. Appreciate your opinion. Hope someone can help with instructions.

Go to repair clinic.com put model number in and see if they sell a service and repair manual for it usually reasonable price. also might try marcone.com on their do it yourself link usually can see schematic and unit breakdown

Thanks for the web site info and taking the time to reply; no luck with obtaining instructions yet but repairclinic has the part for $100 less & they are advising it is genuine GE part.

I don't know where you can get an actual service manual and I've never worked on one so really can't tell you.

It looks like you may have to remove the control panel first to get access the the screws that hold the top down, (ref# 875), or maybe the sealing gaskets, (ref#50&59), are double sided sticky and if you cut the seals the complete cooktop with elements may lift out.

But, here's a parts breakdown of the cooktop parts:

Control Panel parts:

Cooling fan parts below cooktop:

Maybe that will help you with an idea of how if comes apart.

And the model# you should have actually been using to lookup parts is: JS968SF4SS , (note the 4 instead of 1 -- cooktop glass is most likely the same for both though).

Appreciate the reply and diagrams. Looks a bit involved to get to the right screws. Thanks.

Maybe not as involved as it looks.

I looked at one at our local Sears store today and it does appear that the sealing gaskets ref# 50 & 59 are what hold the cooktop module in place.

You will need to pull the range out and with a sharp thin razor knife slice the sealing gaskets on both sides and the back. Then I belive the complete cooktop module will left out as one complete unit, just be careful of the wiring or connection block that supplies power to the cooktop module.

Once the cooktop has been separated from the body of the range it looks pretty simple to just remove the screws all around the edges that hold the glass top/frame to the pan that holds the elements.

Be very careful and don't force anything, you may still have to remove the control panel, there may be a couple of screws in those front two tabs that stick out that may be accessed after removing control panel.

OK. success.
Turns out removing the control panel was the key (no need to mess with gaskets). Once I got most of it apart, there, taped to the inside of the stove (under the maintop glass!) was a mini set of  instructions including how to remove maintop.  Appreciate those who tried to help.  Thanks.
