We have a GE PFS22SISBSS refrigerator and the freezer started getting warm (19 degrees). We cleaned the condenser coils and found the condenser fan motor running slow. While we waited for the motor to arrive we pointed a portable fan at the coils and the freezer now holds 0 degrees. The new motor however also runs slow. Do we need the motherboard? Did we wreck the new motor? Any suggestions would be appreciated.

Sounds like you are getting low voltage to the motor. The original motor was probably ok. If power comes from mother board, it will have to be replaced. Mother board goes for about $100.00

Slow is relative...this is a 12VDC fan motor single speed - check voltage at main board J2 from 3 to 5 and 3 to 8 both should be around 12VDC

It was indeed the motherboard the Master, hvacdrd and Tridewebsr all pointed to. GE would not send me the part no charge but did dispatch a servicer who verified our diagnosis and replaced it no charge. Thanks to all who replied and Pegi for posting the GE letter. Beer fund contribution to follow.

Can you tell me the pin numbering scheme?

I found J2.  It is an 8 pin connector, goes (from left to right)

Blue, N/C,Whir\te,Yellow,Pink, N/C,N/C, Red

I assumed numbering was left to right (Blue being pin 1.

I found Pin 3 to 5 = 3.9v, Pin 3 to 8 = 13.5 v.

I am seeing that the condensor fan runs well, but the evaporator fan (lower right hand corner in back blowing on the coils) barely moves.  I assume it is the 3.8v vs 12v it should have.

Do I now replace the motherboard?

Thanks

It sounds like the exact symptoms we had and the motherboard did fix the problem.  FYI GE aknowleged that they had a problem with these boards and replaced ours for free even though we were past our warranty period.

Good luck.

You are one lucky (and smart) SOB Roger.  I've changed these boards for this exact same issue many times and the price is usually over $225 out the door.

Good for you....
