My GE side by side is just over a year old (timing consistent with Murphy’s Law) and the ice dispenser has stopped working. I think the control board in the back of the Fridge is the point of failure. When I press the dispense lever for ice the interior fans stop running, the coolant pump stops, the chute door flap only partially opens and the control panel area illumination dims. There is a relay on the control board clicking quietly for a moment, and then it all resumes normal operation including the flap briefly popping open then closing but no ice. The water seems to work most of the time except shortly after attempting to get ice. I removed the dispenser motor thinking that it was fried or frozen but the symptoms don’t change. Pulling the ice maker didn’t help either. I pulled the control board and checked for any darkened areas or burned components but only found the odor of a cooked diode or transistor. Is there an inherent problem with this model I should be aware of before I call the Office of the President at GE and become such a nuisance that they simply send me the part? Perhaps a problem you are aware of that will cause this early life failure like a crappy dispenser motor? Thanks for any help

Sounds like a motherboard problem, it controls everything you mentioned, read this and see if yours is included in this replacement program.- _____________________________________________________________ General Electric November 7, 2006 Dear GE Customer Care Servicers, GE Consumer & Industrial places a very high priority on product quality and customer satisfaction and thus continuously assesses our product reliability. Recent analysis has discovered a potential problem with the main circuit board on a limited number of refrigerator models, which could lead to lower than anticipated life expectancy on that component. Therefore, if the main circuit board fails, GE Consumer & Industrial will replace this part free of charge to the consumer until further notice. Models Covered: see attachment The models affected are side-by-side plastic liner, side-by-side metal liner, bottom freezer two door and bottom freezer French door. The models were produced between May 2005 and August 2006 (HH – RL serial range) and are included in this program. See enclosed list. Potential Additional Covered Parts: Specific parts involving the failure of the main board are included in this program. These parts are limited to the following: -Evaporator Fan failure, only if accompanied by a Main Board failure -Dispenser Board failure, only if accompanied by a Main Board failure The main board part number in cases in WR55X10552. Please use your normal warranty MA00 job code for this repair. If you encounter an evaporator fan or dispenser board failure due to the above main board, please include on your invoice and use the normal MA00 job code. It is critical that you verify the proper functioning of the unit including the evaporator fan motor and dispenser board before leaving the home to avoid a repeat call. Units may be in or out of the standard 1-year product warranty and both instances are covered under this concession program. If you previously completed this repair and charged the consumer, please send a copy of the service invoice to General Electric Consumer Relations, PO Box 10736, Norfolk, VA 23513 or fax a copy to 1-877-299-0725 so that we may issue a refund to the consumer. Thanks for the tip. My exact model was not listed but at least one was that had the same model prefix “GSH25JRF”. I contacted GE and they agreed to refund my money if I will provide them a receipt showing purchase of the control board.

On the back behind the silver cover plate. Unplug your machine before opening. All connections are simple plugs and should be keyed to each socket to avoid any mix-up. I'd call GE service first and get a case number. That way when you fax or mail in your receipt you will have a reference for it. I already got my refund check. Good luck

Well thanks for the help! I actually had success with GE. They acknowledged the replacement program and are sending someone out tomorrow to fix it - no charge. I'm very surprised at this - not used to any company these days trying to take care of the customer......

Thanks to this forum I'll be getting my 2 year old GE PSS26NGSA side by side fixed in a couple of days. Symptoms started with the ice dispenser motor humming a while before any ice got dispensed, so I took the ice bin out and cleaned everything up. Things went well for a few days until I made the mistake of saying to my wife while standing in front of the frig "I guess cleaning out the ice maker took care of the problem". Less than one hour later the problems returned and progressed to lights on dispenser just dimming when trying to get anything dispensed, to finally complete failure of refrigerator such that the temperature display panel settings are all blank except for "HRS" flashing in one of the display sections and sound of a motor trying to start but constantly failing in sync with the HRS flashing. No cooling or freezing for the next couple of days till GE gets here, but luckily I've got a backup. I called the 800# in the manual and mentioned that I had read about circuit board failures and asked if my frig was covered (before I found this thread and saw the Nov 06 letter). Rep knew nothing and said there was no warranty, I would have to pay for everything. Found a different # listed for a class action settlement at http://www.bringgoodthingstolife.org/classaction.htm (800-694-8477), the person at that number knew about the bad circuit boards and told me the repairs would be covered. So we'll see on Monday what exactly went bad, I'll just be more careful in the future about talking about an appliance within hearing range.

Hello, Thanks to this site I was able to get my GE profile SxS fridge (PSS26SGRDSS) fixed for FREE after over one year of not being able to use my ice/water dispenser. Just like rdgintex mines failed one month after warranty expired with the exact same symptoms. Probably would have cost over $300 to fix if I had called the "General" without knowing of this replacement program. Thank God I found you all. I just want to say that you all are doing a fine service here and keep up the good work. I gave a love offering of $5 to post and I'm giving another $10 to the beer fund. Thanks Again

Bringing this post back from the past. My GE had the ghosts, then the other day the fan in the freezer started ticking (didn't want to start) and no ice or water. Called a guy out to fix it, and while he was gone to get a new board I found this website and the GE parts problem with the mother board. Also found out GE might cover the costs. Called them. They answered on the second ring, told me yes they would cover this 4 year old model. Faxed in the bill. Two hours later they called and asked what the cost of the part was. Told them I didn't know, guy gave me one price, parts and labor. She said she would contact him and I'd get my money. Never would have known if it wasn't for this great site. I'm one happy dude. I'd also like to resurrect this thread to say that I might be getting a 2+ year old PFS22MIW (bottom freezer, french doors) repaired for free. I called the 800-894-8477 number and found that I am covered under the main board concession program. The symptoms I have are the sound of a small internal combustion engine running non-stop while the freezer and fridge temps continue to rise (35+ and 50+ now). I suspect the compressor is failing, and know it is covered under the sealed system 5-year warranty, but didn't want a $200-$300 surprise if the main board was the cause. Since I'm covered there, I am having GE send someone (not for FOUR DAYS! Thanks in advance (fourth repair from this site)

Well hey...I will have to see how many new boards I can get compensated for... This week was the first time I had a failure like this in a GE sxs- lights dimming, fan cutting off when calling for ice or water....swapped the main board out, and it solved it. Labled that board special to see if the capacitor fix works for it also. I just got (20) 47uF caps, and (20) 470 uF ...enough to fix ten boards. Total cost, $43 from digikey. Got the 10,000 hr rated ones, as that was as high as I could find. Will report back in a special posting if it all works out. Or not...but so far so good on the repairs.

The repairman just left my house. Took him 5 minutes to replace the board on my PFS22 refrigerator. The problem appears to be solved. Next call is to GE.

By the way, your price shipped to Illinois is $133.00. Abt's price is a whopping $204.05. Then again, they did hand deliver it.
