I would like to repair this 6-yr-old Maytag refrigerator rather than buy a new one, but I need some advice. The freezer works fine but the refrigerator won't get any cooler than 68 degrees. The unit seems to run for long periods of time, but not constantly. I've turned both of the termostats up, but to no avail. I don't think the vent that feeds the cold air into the frig from the freezer is blocked, but I don't know that for sure. What should I do now?

Inside the beer compartment, up top. Look on the underside of the control console. You'll see a hole. It's item 15 in this picture.

I missed this the first time, but upon checking the freezer compartment I find a thick layer of ice buildup across the bottom back of the compartment. Does that help with the diagnosis of the problem and what should I do next? Thanks for the help.

Your defrost system is probably out, and you will have a bad defrost timer/ADC board, or defrost heater or defrost termination thermostat. You will need to see which of these parts have failed or a combination of the three.

No ADC board on this one. Go ahead and replace both the defrost timer and the defrost thermostat.

There are two different defrost thermostat assemblies shown on the repairclinic.com site. One of them--791286--is not in stock. The other one--664901--is in stock. They look the same in the photos and they are the same price. Will either one work or do I need a specific one? Thanks again for all your help.

I am going to order the defrost timer control and the defrost thermostat assembly. Should I also replace the defrost heater assembly? We've been out of town and I haven't had a chance to tackle this, but I must move forward now. Thanks for the help.

Yes, repalace the heater also incase it is bad, that way all is new. You need to defrost all of the ice out of there also.

If I replace these parts do you think that will fix the problem? How difficult is it to replace these three parts? The freezer is working fine and it just isn't sending the cold air to the frig part.

As these 3 parts are the whole defrost system cannot fail to solve the problem. Ice is an insulator, once it builds it it blocks the cold air from blowing from the freezer to the food compartment. Heater is at the bottom of the evaperator in the freezer, bi-metal is at the top of the coil, defrost timer should be in the food compartment. I have received the defrost timer, defrost thermostat and defrost heater and tomorrow I am going to replace them. Can you tell me where I can find where each of these are located on my refrigerator? Maytag model number MTB2456AEW. Does the freezer need to be defrosted before I begin or can I just unplug it and start the repair work?Is there anything else I need to know? Thanks for all your help.

Your freezer needs to be defrosted. I would unplug it,clean the food out and then put a pot of boiling water in the freezer and then close the door and change water every hour or so till I went to bed if I were you. That should help defrost it for you without a lot of work.
