My 9 year old refrigerator has started leaving the ice cream slushy at an average of 20 - 25 degrees in that compartment. Meanwhile, the food area stays around 40.

Following guidelines and scads of postings here, I've cleaned and photographed the beast. It appears to possibly be a sealed system problem (note the lack of frost on the evaporator).

There are a number of things which aren't clear from my scavenging here at this fabulous site:

Are there other items to examine that may lead elsewhere diagnostically instead of the freon/compressor?
What is the common $$ for a repair to sealed system?
Is the $$ a main reason for not pursuing repair of a sealed system?
How long might I expect the refrigerator portion to continue cooling acceptably based upon the meager information my pictures and model data provide?

We have a chest freezer in the basement (just purchased) to use instead - I'm just trying to postpone the inevitable refrigerator replacment if that is my only path.

Personal Observation: I think that the appliances are co-conspirators. I just replaced the garbage disposal this weekend already and now the bottom freezer decides to become dysfunctional... a few months ago it was the dishwasher...

1. Looks like a sealed system problem from your pic. If the compressor is running then it can't be the start device. But of course ze condenser is clean, non?

2. Many factors involved, you'll get a different price from every servicer. I'll give a different price for the same job on a different day.

4. Impossible to predict. I'd be buying milk by the quart.

This unit looks like it was actually made by Amana.

look at your high side line that comes off the compressor and goes through drain pan..

if it looks like this ,you have a big problem ,call a expert..

Yes, zee condenser is very clean!

I almost broke the wife's crack-n-crevice tool while doing so... all fans are running just fine, the compressor does run quite a bit too.

The unit might look like an Amana... but it's got Whirlpool badging and labels all over it - perhaps they are genetically similar? :yikes:

Here's another pic.... what causes the frosting buildup on this part but not on the evaporator?

Yo! Doc! Pardon my ignorance... but what is the significance of the 'high side line' and how does one identify it?

Looks like Dr. Freeze forgot something.....

...and looks like you have a serious sealed system problem, like almost no freon in the system...time to call in a service company that is certified for this type of repair...we are talking lots of $$$'s here too..

These Whirlpool bottom mount units were made by Amana for Whirlpool and GE. Back before the days of LG and before GE came out with their own bottom mount refrigerators, Amana was the only manufacturer of bottom mount refrigerators.
